The drivers of three vehicles escaped without life threatening injury after a crash that left commuters in queues of traffic. The crash, early yesterday close to the A1 junction with Long Bennington, involved a silver Vauxhall Corsa, a Scania articulated lorry and a white Mercedes Sprinter van.
Fire Crews from Newark and Grantham were called to the collision at 3am and released one person from the Corsa using hydraulic equipment. They also stemmed a diesel leak from the lorry.
A spokesman from Lincolnshire police said it was believed the driver of the lorry, traveling northbound, had braked causing the lorry to jackknife across the central reservation hitting the Corsa which was driving southbound.
The lorry driver, a 58-year-old man from Sunderland, had minor injuries and was taken to Grantham Hospital with the driver of the Corsa, a 22-year-old woman from Scarborough, who suffered serious, but not life threatening, injuries.
The van driver, a 30-year-old man from Sutton, Lincolnshire, was not injured.
Police closed both carriageways of the A1 from 3.30am. They were still closed when the Advertiser went out to print.
Traffic was diverted through Long Bennington and along the A52 but vehicles on the A1 tailed back towards North Muskham and caused queues past Newark’s British Sugar factory and on the A46 through Newark.
